History, Community & What to Do in Palmer, Alaska

Whether you’re a long-time local, new to the Mat-Su Valley, or searching for a trusted Palmer dentist, this scenic town offers more than just postcard views- it’s a place where history, agriculture, and modern life blend beautifully.

🌿 Palmer’s Deep Roots: A Town Built on Agriculture and Ingenuity

Unlike many Alaskan towns born from the gold rush, Palmer’s origins are rooted in farming. In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, the U.S. government selected Palmer as the site of a bold social experiment: the Matanuska Colony Project. Over 200 families from the Midwest were relocated to Palmer with the goal of establishing a successful agricultural community in Alaska.

The town's layout and farmland are still influenced by this project today. With wide streets, beautiful barns, and fertile land, Palmer remains a key player in Alaska’s farming economy—earning it the nickname “Alaska’s Garden.”
